The Subs 2007-2011

one saturday night in 2007 a popular classic rock band had to cancel a gig at homer’s coffeehouse. the manager asked me (david cedillo) if i could be a substitute with my friend (chris mull). i said ‘yes,’ and called us THE SUBS. to understand how THE SUBS came into existence, a little history lesson is required. we met around 1985-86 when we were dragged to church regularly by our girlfriends. chris was playing in a few gospel bands. i was putting myself through college working two jobs. one of the jobs was delivering doughnuts before sunrise. chris rode shotgun and kept the zombies and vampires at bay with wooden stakes as we drove through the city in a van full of pastries. by the end of the morning the sun was up, and we were punchy from all the coffee and baked goods we grabbed at the shop. the next 20+ years were a blur of late nights, old bridges, vacant lots, weird movies, and cheap beer… sometimes all at once. we managed to write and record our own songs, create and destroy our own bands, and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. when the dust settled we both had wives, children, dayjobs, and an unfamiliar order out of chaos. we played our last show as THE SUBS at homer’s coffeehouse on june 11, 2011.  thanks to everyone who kept rotten produce at home and didn’t throw it at us during our shows.
